Spot UV business cards that catch the light
Spot UV adds a glossy, slightly raised coating to chosen parts of matt business cards, usually the logo or a pattern. It makes a card feel considered the moment someone picks it up. Here is how it works and how to prepare your artwork.
- Glossy highlight on matt
- Logo or pattern accents
- Artwork guidance
- Timing on quote

What spot UV does
On a matt laminated card, spot UV is a clear gloss varnish applied only where you want it. The contrast between flat matt and shiny gloss is what people notice, and it also gives the coated area a subtle raised feel. Dark cards with a glossy logo are the classic combination, though patterns, initials and lines work well too.
It suits professionals who hand out few cards and want each to count: consultants, designers, property agents, salons and executives.
Setting up the spot UV layer
Spot UV needs a separate artwork layer. Create a second page in your PDF, or a named layer, containing only the areas to be coated, in solid black on white at 100% and the same size as the card. Avoid very fine lines and tiny text in the coating, as small details may not register precisely.
If you are not sure how to build the layer, send your design and we can quote setting it up. See the artwork guidelines for general file preparation.
Cards that pair well with spot UV
Spot UV looks strongest on matt-laminated stock with bold backgrounds. Heavier card gives a luxurious feel. Light backgrounds and busy photos reduce the contrast. You can have the coating on one or both sides; confirm the specification on your quote. For simpler needs, standard cards from our business card service are quicker to arrange.
Timing considerations
Spot UV involves an extra production stage, so it typically needs more lead time than a standard laminated card. Any quick turnaround is subject to capacity, job size, approved artwork, payment and a confirmed deadline. If your event is close, ask us for the realistic timing before you order, and consider a standard finish as a backup.
Collection and handling
Collect from Rivonia once we confirm your cards are ready, and check the coating alignment on a few cards. Keep cards boxed and away from heat to protect the finish.
